  • Try not to share saliva with the baby through common use of feeding spoons or licking pacifiers. After each feeding, wipe your child’s gums with a clean, damp gauze pad or washcloth.
  • When your child’s teeth come in, brush them gently with a child-size toothbrush and a smear (or grain of rice sized amount) of fluoride toothpaste until the age of 3.
  • Brush the teeth with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste from the ages of 3 to 6.
  • Supervise brushing until your child can be counted on to spit and not swallow toothpaste—usually not before he or she is 6 or 7.
  • Place only formula, milk or breast milk in bottles. Avoid filling the bottle with liquids such as sugar water, juice or soft drinks.
  • Infants should finish their bedtime and naptime bottles before going to bed.
  • If your child uses a pacifier, provide one that is clean—don’t dip it in sugar or honey.
  • Encourage your child to drink from a cup by his/her first birthday.
  • Encourage healthy eating habits.

When your child’s first tooth appears, talk to your dentist about scheduling the first dental visit. Treat the first dental visit as you would a well-baby checkup with the child’s physician. Remember: starting early is the key to a lifetime of good dental health. (ADA)

Tobacco, Ecstasy, Amphetamines and Methamphetamines: These drugs can cause constriction of the capillaries in your gums affecting the attachment of the bone to the tissue of the teeth which may lead to tooth loss.

Marijuana, Ecstasy, Amphetamines, Methamphetamines, Heroin and Replacement Therapies: These drugs may decrease the production of saliva in your mouth causing dry mouth which will increase the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

Ecstasy, Marijuana and Heroin: These drugs cause sugar cravings. Consumption of sweets and sugary drinks weaken the tooth enamel.

Alcohol: When drinking alcohol your mouth is exposed to increased levels of sugars and acids which can be damaging to your teeth. Excessive drinking may lead to vomiting which may lead to tooth erosion. It is also important to know that according to the Canadian Cancer Society, the risk of developing oral cancer increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Drinking alcohol is the second major risk factor for developing oral cancer.

Periodontal, also known as gum or pocket measurement is an evaluation performed by a dental professional, which involves measuring the health of your gums and supporting bone structure for your teeth. Bone loss is first caused by an accumulation of plaque and bacteria around a tooth and if the bacterium isn’t removed properly it causes gum inflammation and in later stages, if left untreated, will eventually lead to bone loss.

A way of detecting periodontal disease is through taking periodontal measurements of each tooth at a dental visit. These measurements help us determine the overall health of the supporting structure of the teeth. A normal, healthy measurement will read from 1-3 mm and the deeper the reading the more severe the problem. To help treat moderate stages (4-6 mm) your hygienist may recommend a deeper cleaning with more frequent visits to help stop the effects of periodontitis. However, if more advanced stages are noted surgery may be needed with a referral to a periodontist (gum specialist).

Ways to help reduce periodontal measurements and maintain healthy gums:
– Brushing: Practicing proper oral hygiene daily, through brushing  at least 2 times a day for at least 2 minutes.
– Flossing: Daily flossing is very important when it comes to gum health, because it goes between your teeth and under your gums to help reduce bacterial build-up where a toothbrush can’t reach.
– Eating a well-balanced diet.
– Maintaining regular dental check-ups and professional cleaning.
– Don’t smoke: Smoking increases your risk of periodontal disease.

As January 1st nears many of us are thinking of New Year’s resolutions. If you smoke, your resolution may be to quit. Although you may have tried a number of times in the past know that preparation, being ready to quit and wanting to live a healthier life are key to kicking the habit. Below are helpful steps and resources in aiding you to achieve your goal put out by the American Dental Association.

Step 3:  Stay busy
