1. Plaque full of bacteria, that turns to calculus, builds up between the teeth and gums.

2. The gums become red and inflamed caused by the body’s reaction to the bacteria.

3. The bone recedes due to the inflammatory response to bacteria.

4. Pockets are formed (space between the tooth and gum) due to decreased bone tissue.

WHY SHOULD I VISIT A DENTIST? – DENTISTRY IN BRAMPTON

Brampton Dentist, Dentists in Brampton, Kids Dental Brampton, Dental Info, Dental Check Ups and Cleaning, Tooth Facts,

Regular check-ups are important for cleaning, the detection of cavities and periodontal examination. Plaque and tartar can build up in areas that are not easily reached through home maintenance. These can be removed during a dental cleaning to prevent cavities and gum disease.

While, for some patients, semi-annual visits are sufficient for cleaning and detection of cavities, patients’ needs do vary and patients should discuss the frequency of visits with their dentist.

Patients should also contact their dentist immediately, if their gums bleed, teeth become hypersensitive to temperature or pressure, or in the event of tooth pain or abscess.

DIABETES and Your Oral Health – Brampton Dentists

Dr. Elizabeth Dimovski and Associates – Brampton Dentists 905-458-6620

Research shows that gum disease and diabetes may affect one another. For instance, gum disease can intensify the complications associated with diabetes by increasing blood sugar levels. High blood sugar levels over an extended period of time are associated with premature degeneration of eyes, kidneys, nerves and blood vessels. Studies have also shown that people with diabetes face a greater risk of developing oral infections and gum disease than those who do not have diabetes. The good news is that the treatment of either gum disease or diabetes can lead to improvements in the other. Your dentist has the training and experience necessary to assess your oral health, and to determine a course of treatment that is best for you. Some of the most common oral health problems associated with diabetes are:

·      tooth decay
·      gum disease
·      dry mouth
·      fungal infections
·      lesions in the mouth
·      taste impairment
·      infection and delayed healing

If you are a diabetic, speak to your dentist about the best course of treatment for you. Make sure to let him or her know:

·      if the diabetes is under control
·      if you take insulin and when your last usual dose of insulin was administered
·      if there has been any other change in your medical history
·      the names of all the herbal medicines, prescription and over-the-counter drugs you are taking

THE IMPORTANCE OF DENTAL X-RAYS

Melissa SAYS!

Dentist Brampton, Dental x-Rays,

Along with a dental examination dental x-rays are an important part of your dental health. Dental x-rays help your dentist diagnose cavities (that can not be seen by a visual examination), cracks in the tooth, diseases in the bone, periodontal or gum disease, infections underneath the gum, bone loss, abscesses, cysts or tumors.

X-rays can help diagnose problems early, when they are easily treatable and cost a lot less money. It is better to have a small filling done then to let it go until you are in pain. If there is pain or infection this means you have let the problem get too far and may need a lot of treatment which also increases time of treatment and cost.

On an individual basis, your dentist decides how often to take x-rays depending on the health of the oral cavity. If you are prone to cavities or have a lot of bone loss the dentist might suggest more frequent x-rays, then someone who has no bone loss and not prone to decay. At our office we take digital x-rays. For more information on this or other topics, be sure to contact one of our dental professionals.
