Below is a list of the drugs and their effect on your teeth and oral health.

Tobacco, Ecstasy, Amphetamines and Methamphetamines: These drugs can cause constriction of the capillaries in your gums affecting the attachment of the bone to the tissue of the teeth which may lead to tooth loss.

Marijuana, Ecstasy, Amphetamines, Methamphetamines, Heroin and Replacement Therapies: These drugs may decrease the production of saliva in your mouth causing dry mouth which will increase the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

Ecstasy, Marijuana and Heroin: These drugs cause sugar cravings. Consumption of sweets and sugary drinks weaken the tooth enamel.

Alcohol: When drinking alcohol your mouth is exposed to increased levels of sugars and acids which can be damaging to your teeth. Excessive drinking may lead to vomiting which may lead to tooth erosion. It is also important to know that according to the Canadian Cancer Society, the risk of developing oral cancer increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Drinking alcohol is the second major risk factor for developing oral cancer.

Will your New Year’s Resolution be to quit smoking? Here are steps and resources to help you achieve your goal!

As January 1st nears many of us are thinking of New Year’s resolutions. If you smoke, your resolution may be to quit. Although you may have tried a number of times in the past know that preparation, being ready to quit and wanting to live a healthier life are key to kicking the habit. Below are helpful steps and resources in aiding you to achieve your goal put out by the American Dental Association.

Step 1:  Have a planNew Year's resolution Quit Smoking, Brampton Dentists, Dental offices In Brampton, Cosmetic Dentist in Brampton Top Dentists, Beast Dentist in Brampton,

Once you’ve made up your mind to quit smoking and set the date, develop a plan. There are free tools online at smokefree.gov and a toll-free number, 1-800-QUIT-NOW, to help you succeed. Download an app to track your progress.

Step 2:  Don’t go it alone

It will be easier to quit smoking if you have support from family and friends. Let them know you’ve decided to quit, ask for their support, and tell them specifically what they can do to help. Spend time with people who want you to succeed. Talk to friends who have quit and ask for their advice.

Step 3:  Stay busy

Replace your smoking habit with a healthy habit like exercise. Make plans for dinner or a movie with non-smoking friends. Instead of smoking, chew sugarless gum—it keeps your mouth busy and helps prevent cavities, too.

Step 4:  Avoid smoking triggers

Stay away from people, places and things that tempt you to smoke. Some common triggers include stress, alcohol, coffee, and hanging out with people who smoke. Throw out cigarettes, lighters and ashtrays, and go to places where smoking isn’t allowed.

Step 5:  Reward your accomplishments

Quitting is hard. And, every hour or day you go without a cigarette is an achievement. Take it hour by hour, and reward yourself for small successes. With all the money you save on cigarettes, you can treat yourself to a stress-relieving massage or a pedicure! ADA

Top Brampton Dentists, Teeth During Christmas, Brampton Dental Offices, Sweets and Your teeth,During the Christmas season it’s not just our waist lines we should be worried about. With all the parties, chocolate gifts and extra hockey games the kids play during Christmas tournaments, we need to pay extra attention to our teeth and gums.

With the increased intake of sugar through sweets, alcohol or sports drinks to hydrate during hockey games, we need to take extra care of our teeth. When it comes to our teeth, it’s not about how much sugar we consume rather how long it stays in our mouth.

Here are some simple steps to protect your teeth and your smile.

  • Top Brampton Dentists, Teeth During Christmas, Brampton Dental Offices, Sweets and Your teeth, Sports Drinks and Your Teeth,Take extra care: Brush at least 3 times a day during the holiday season with a soft bristle toothbrush. ( Be sure to wait 30-60 minutes after eating.)
  • Don’t forget to floss. It’s especially important to get the food out that is stuck in-between the teeth.
  • Drink water during hockey games as the sugars from sports drinks get locked in your teeth with the mouth guard.
  • Drink tap water. Since most contains fluoride, it helps prevent tooth decay no matter how old you are.
  • Try eating sweets during meals and not between.
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 months or after having the cold or the flu.
  • Be sure to visit your dentists every 3-6 months.

Wishing everyone a great, happy, healthy and white holiday season!

Do you want a whiter brighter smile?

Teeth Whitening, Brampton Dentists, Dental Info, Dentists in Brampton, Great Smiles, Whitening Specials, At some point, you may consider tooth whitening to help brighten your smile. Before using whitening products, talk to your dentist to determine the most appropriate treatment for you and if your teeth and gums are healthy enough to undergo a whitening procedure. This is especially important if you have fillings, crowns and/or extremely dark stains on your teeth.

Some popular whitening methods include:

  • In-office bleaching. A bleaching agent is applied to teeth and a light may be used to enhance the action of the agent. In-office bleaching products typically contain a higher percentage of peroxide than at-home formulations. The procedure is usually completed in less than two hours.
  • At-home bleaching. Peroxide-containing whiteners that bleach the tooth enamel. They typically come in a gel and are placed in a custom mouth tray. The bleaching trays are worn for short periods of time over a few days to gradually whiten the teeth.
  • Whitening toothpastes. Although all toothpastes help remove surface stains “whitening” toothpastes that carry the CDA Seal of Approval have special chemical or polishing agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness. They do not alter the intrinsic color of teeth like bleaching agents do.
