Do you want a whiter brighter smile?

Teeth Whitening, Brampton Dentists, Dental Info, Dentists in Brampton, Great Smiles, Whitening Specials, At some point, you may consider tooth whitening to help brighten your smile. Before using whitening products, talk to your dentist to determine the most appropriate treatment for you and if your teeth and gums are healthy enough to undergo a whitening procedure. This is especially important if you have fillings, crowns and/or extremely dark stains on your teeth.

Some popular whitening methods include:

  • In-office bleaching. A bleaching agent is applied to teeth and a light may be used to enhance the action of the agent. In-office bleaching products typically contain a higher percentage of peroxide than at-home formulations. The procedure is usually completed in less than two hours.
  • At-home bleaching. Peroxide-containing whiteners that bleach the tooth enamel. They typically come in a gel and are placed in a custom mouth tray. The bleaching trays are worn for short periods of time over a few days to gradually whiten the teeth.
  • Whitening toothpastes. Although all toothpastes help remove surface stains “whitening” toothpastes that carry the CDA Seal of Approval have special chemical or polishing agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness. They do not alter the intrinsic color of teeth like bleaching agents do.

GIVE YOUR TEETH A BREAK – HARD VS SOFT BRISTLE TOOTHBRUSH

Using a hard bristle toothbrush is good for your teeth and oral health!
WRONG!

Brampton Dentists, Soft Toothbrush, Dental Info, Dental Facts, Dental Cartoons, It is very important when choosing a toothbrush we choose one with soft bristles. Brushing your teeth with a medium or hard bristle toothbrush damages the tooth enamel and gum tissue which can often lead to gum recession and abrasion of the enamel. The myth about a hard bristle toothbrush cleaning your teeth better is just wrong. A soft bristle toothbrush is a lot more flexible allowing the bristles to reach between your teeth and gums. It is also easier on the teeth to assure not causing damage.
Give your teeth and gums a break and make sure you use a soft bristle tooth brush! Soft brushes are designed to be gentle on your teeth and gums, but don’t throw those hard brushes out, they are good for ring around the collar and cleaning around faucets and little corners!

Do you wake up with a dull headache? Brampton Dentists +

stress, teeth grinding, headaches, Brampton, dentists, Night Guard,

Teeth grinding can be caused not just by stress and anxiety but by sleep disorders, an abnormal bite or teeth that are missing or crooked. The symptoms of teeth grinding include:

– dull headaches

– jaw soreness

– teeth that are painful or loose

– fractured teeth

Your dentist can fit you with a night guard to protect your teeth during sleep. In some cases, your dentist or physician may recommend taking a muscle relaxant before bedtime. If stress is the cause you need to find a way to relax. Meditation, counselling and exercise can all help reduce stress and anxiety.

Teeth grinding is also common in children. However, because their teeth and jaws change and grow so quickly it is not usually a damaging habit that requires treatment and most outgrow it by adolescence.

Although in adults teeth grinding is often the result of stress, the same is not always true with children. Other possible causes of teeth grinding in children include:

– irritation in the mouth

– allergies

– misaligned teeth

If you’re concerned about your child’s teeth grinding, ask your child’s dentist about the potential causes and, if necessary, the possible solutions. (ADA)

Protect Your Kid’s Teeth – Dental Sealants

Brampton Dentists, Dental Sealants, Cavities,

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants act as a barrier to prevent cavities. They are a plastic material usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) where decay occurs most often.

Brushing and flossing help remove food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth. But toothbrush bristles cannot reach all the way into the depressions and grooves to extract food and plaque. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas by “sealing out” plaque and food.

Sealants are easy for your dentist to apply. The sealant is painted onto the tooth enamel, where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of back teeth. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids. As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and may last several years before a reapplication is needed. During your regular dental visits, your dentist will check the condition of the sealants and reapply them when necessary.

The likelihood of developing pit and fissure decay begins early in life, so children and teenagers are obvious candidates. But adults can benefit from sealants as well. (ADA)
